Top 10 best grass strimmer in the UK 2021
Here is our recommendation of the top 10 best grass strimmer on the market that you should not miss out on. Let’s have a look!
1. Ryobi OLT1832 18V ONE+ Cordless Grass Strimmer
This is one of the most comfortable strimmers to use. This is thanks to a lightweight build, at 2.6kg without the battery, combined with lots of adjustable settings. The head itself can be angled in three ways, which uses one big button that we found very easy to use. Changing between edging and trimming is also a quick one switch move.
When it comes to performance this strimmer is a real all-rounder. Yes, it’ll tackle strimming or edging of grass just fine, but it’ll also deal with weeds and even thinner brush thanks to that 1.6mm cord that can be adjusted between 25 and 30cm of reach. We found it split a fair amount – mainly because we were heavy-handed near stone edges – but that wasn’t an issue thanks to the auto-feed. Take a little pressure off the power trigger and the spool feeds more line through – this was a truly brilliant feature that made the job non-stop, reducing battery usage and, of course, getting it done sooner.
2. BLACK+DECKER 18V Cordless 28 cm String Grass Strimmer
Black and Decker really know what they’re doing when it comes to garden equipment, and this BLACK+DECKER Lithium-Ion Cordless Electric Strimmer is no exception! It wins first place for the best strimmer on the market. It has no cable which may calm your concerns about cutting through the power supply. Instead, it uses a powerful 18 V lithium battery that can cut 2,500 linear metres in one charge. What does this mean in layman’s terms? Well, it’s great news for efficiency: unless your garden is a large field you can get it done it one go!
An automatic feed means the line spools out automatically. There’s no annoying stop and bump action needed. This is a great piece of kit which is comfortable to use and offers flexibility with good results. It’s my top recommendation for all strimming jobs except large brambles and tough roots.
3. Flymo 9669523-01 Contour XT Electric Grass Strimmer
If you have small, well cared for lawns that just need finishing off with a light strimming along fence lines and walls, the Flymo Contour XT will handle the job perfectly. And with the push of a button, the trimmer head swivels vertically so you can trim the edges of open borders. The chunky edging wheel makes this easier and more accurate, ensuring a nice, tidy finish.
The line auto-feed works well too and it weighs in at 2.8kg but it’s very well balanced so it feels even lighter. It has a 10m long power cord, which may or may not be enough but that’s easily solved with an extension lead.
4. Bosch 06008A5470 ART 30 Electric Grass Strimmer
Ideal for medium-sized gardens thanks to the better than average 30cm cutting diameter, this is one of Bosch’s standout grass trimmers. Pair this with the powerful motor, and you can tackle your lawn area quicker than you’d ever imagined. This is great if it is one of your more hated jobs.
It is all lightweight, and the secondary handle is also adjustable which gives you maximum comfort. As is the height, so you can adapt it to your own needs between 80-115 cm. An automatic twin line also takes some of the frustration out of replacing this if it snaps or wears away, and the fact there are two gives a bit more reliability and cutting power.
5. Bosch 06008C1H70 Electric Grass Strimmer
This model is one of the best selling models on the UK market and it is affordable and gets solid ratings. It is small and lightweight and that will suit many people. It is also a good choice for people who only have small areas where a strimmer needs to be used. The advantages of this strimmer are the price, the quick assembly, the semi-automatic feed and it does come with a Bosch 3-year warranty. For light strimming or doing the edges of your lawn, this will do a good job.
6. WORX WG163E.1 18V 20V MAX Cordless Grass Trimmer
The Worx WG163E.1 is one of a few two-in-one tools on our list, acting as a grass trimmer and wheeled edger in one. Worx promises quick, hassle-free conversion between the modes and a handy auto line feed, both of which mean you won’t get slowed down mid-landscaping, and include two li-ion batteries into the bargain, so you can keep using one while the other recharges. A 90-degree pivoting head also makes it easier to trim tricky spots, so if you have lawn furniture, a trampoline, or a tricky-shaped garden, it may be a good buy.
7. Garden Gear Cordless Strimmer
The Garden Gear Cordless Strimmer is probably the most affordable unit on the market as the battery is interchangeable with multiple other tools. That said, a fully charged battery will only provide around 30 minutes of charge. Either you’ll have to be clever with how you use the tool for maximum trimming per charge or you’ll have to buy another battery. We’re impressed with the Garden Gear Cordless Strimmer because it has a wide cutting width, plenty of power and can be adjusted in multiple ways depending on the task.
8. Kärcher 14443100 Ltr 18-30 Cordless Battery Grass Trimmer
This trimmer from Kärcher has a few great features that are worth remembering. Firstly, the shaft length is the longest of all the trimmers in our ranking, so it’s probably the best option for those who are 6 ft or over. Secondly, it has a respectable running and charge time, which is always a nice bonus.
In addition, if you have other Kärcher 18V battery products in the shed, you can use the same battery for the whole range. Weighing in at a few kilos, this is one of the heavier options, although we can assume that is to do with the additional height.
9. Bosch Grass Strimmer Universal Grass
It’s not hugely powerful and it doesn’t come cheap, but the Bosch Universal is easily the most ergonomic grass trimmer we’ve tested yet. The main pole is telescopic, so you can adjust it to the most comfortable height, while a second handle extends outwards from a pivot to help balance the weight of the cutting head. Meanwhile, the 18V battery slots into a spot at the top where your right elbow naturally rests while the machine’s in use. This design minimises the 2.7kg weight of the strimmer so much that you can keep on trimming for hours – though the battery will run out of puff long before you do. The 2Ah battery lasts for around 40 minutes and takes just under 90 minutes to charge.
This trimmer hasn’t got what it takes to take out heavy weeds or brambles, but it’s ideal for tackling lighter stuff and grass. It works quietly and reliably, while a pedal makes it easy to tilt the head for edging or cutting at an angle. Overall, it’s a fantastic little strimmer.
10. Stihl Segadora con batería FSA 45
The Stihl FSA 45 is one of the strong trimmers with blades (double plastic) in the head, which clear both grass and tough weeds very effectively. You can easily replace the plastic blades by unclipping them from the strimmer head and clicking on new ones. It includes a couple of extra blades, which are tidily attached to the machine. You don’t get many, but on the other hand, they’re very tough and you only need to change them every four or five sessions. You can also install a spool of the line instead of plastic blades if you wish. The Assembly of the strimmer itself is straightforward and only requires two screws.
How to choose the best grass strimmer in the UK 2021
Many of the cordless trimmers are 18V. This will work well for the average small to medium garden. If you need to tackle tough areas, longer or wet grass, you might need a trimmer with more power. We have included a range of options with something to suit all requirements.
Grass Trimmer Run Time
Most cordless trimmers have a relatively short run time but this is generally enough to neaten the necessary areas. One can always purchase additional batteries for a longer run time if necessary.
The beauty of cordless trimmers is that they are extremely light. Those with more power are slightly heavier but still manageable and easy to manoeuvre.
String or Blade Type
Most trimmers use a nylon-string while some have a nylon blade. The blades are convenient and easy to replace but they are not highly durable. Fortunately, blades are generally inexpensive. The nylon string is more commonly used and can be either a single or double fed system.
When using a nylon string you want a convenient and hassle-free feed system. The “bump” method is the most basic but can still be effective. Others have a trigger or automatic feed which makes them more convenient.
Edge trimming is an important feature to have on a cordless trimmer and all of the models we have reviewed have this capability. Most are easy to change to this function.
Grass Trimmer Budget
Another advantage of cordless trimmers is that they are generally great value for money. One thing to look out for is if they include a battery and charger. The models we featured are all able to share batteries and chargers with other related equipment from the same brand. This is convenient and can save you money provided you have a few other cordless garden tools from the same manufacturer.
If this is the first product you buy in a range and it comes without a battery and charger, be sure to budget for them. You will be able to save some money on future purchases as you will have the option to purchase a body-only tool i.e. without battery and charger. This is an important reason to go for a reputable brand that you can build on.
The best grass strimmer can add the finishing touches to your garden, giving you a beautifully manicured lawn. The strimmer is able to tidy up edges and small areas that a mower can’t reach. Garden strimmers come in all shapes and sizes, with different power options and with either plastic blades or string whatever your lawn requirements, there is bound to be a model to suit your needs. If you are passionate about taking perfect care of your garden and you already own a hedge trimmer and a lawnmower, whether it’s a robot lawnmower, corded lawn mower or a cordless lawn mower, a good strimmer makes a perfect addition to your garden gadgets.
