If you enjoy a hot drink on the morning commute or on a weekend walk, investing in a reusable cup or travel mug can score you discounts on your drinks and also benefit the environment. Reusable travel coffee cups are more popular than ever, and there’s never been a better time to get one. With the environmental impact of single-use disposable cups in mind, a number of big-name coffee chains, including Costa Coffee, Pret and Starbucks, now offer discounts to customers who bring in their own cup.
Top 10 best travel coffee cup in UK 2021
Below, we’ve rounded up the reusable travel coffee cups that will keep your favourite drink warm and prevent spills, as well as cutting down on waste.
1.Thermos Stainless King 16-Ounce Travel Tumbler, Midnight Blue
From iconic brand Thermos, this stainless steel travel coffee mug is the last word in knock-proof, shock-proof, incredibly stable drink transportation. As well as being durable enough to get knocked around in a pack, not one leak or dribble gets past its sealing lid, even when turned upside down, and it keeps contents hot for hours on end – for those reasons, we think it’s the best travel mug for walking and hiking.
2.New Ember Temperature-Control Smart Mug 2
With an Ember allows you to set your perfect drinking temperature – between 50C and 62.5C – and you will get a notification from an app on your phone to say it has reached that optimum point, plus the cup will keep it there for three hours. A touch-sensitive display on the mug can also be used to check and change the temperature, so no worry if your phone is not at hand.
The black matte cup looks elegant, and it is comfortable to hold and use, with 360º drinking. Plus, it is 100 per cent leakproof, with a push of the lid to open and close with a tight seal. With the mug comes a matte black charging coaster, which we keep on our desks because the battery life does not last beyond those three hours. And despite the internal electrics, this cup is safe to handwash and submersible up to 1m in water, but do not put anything but the lid in the dishwasher.
3.Stanley One Hand 6439-005 Classic Mug
Stanley is a century-old name known for its array of durable mugs, cups, and more. In fact, the company patented all-steel vacuum flasks way back in 1913. That top-grade technology is bottled into the sleek and simple design of the Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug. Depending on what size you buy, the item maintains the temperature of hot beverages for up to nine hours, cold drinks for 12, and iced ones for a full 40 hours. There are Stanley products that insulate temperatures for even longer, but we selected this model because of its convenient trigger-action lid—perfect for seamless sipping during a commute or hike.
4.Tefal travel mug
This travel mug has a lot going for it: the rubberised outer is completely cool to touch and easy to grip, the base is non-slip, and it comes in three sizes: 200ml, 360ml and 500ml.
As well as being very lightweight and dishwasher-safe, the stainless steel vacuum insulation is effective, keeping coffee hot all the way through your commute.
The main downside, however, is also the cup’s USP: it has a ‘360° drinking edge’, which means you can drink from any angle with the lid still on when you swivel the top open.
5.Contigo Byron Snapseal Travel Mug
Another top product for holding your tea or coffee from Contigo is the Byron Snapseal. More effective, sustainable, and stylish than a single-use cup, this mug is an insulated mug that offers excellent heat retention but can also keep your drink cold, too. Ideal for one-handed drinking, the convenient lid snaps open and shut easily, and automatically delivers a vacuum-sealed performance to prevent drinks from spilling.
This convenient vacuum travel mug is designed for a simple one-handed drinking experience. Just snap the lid back when you want to take a sip and snap it back in place when you’re done. In addition, this device will keep your coffee and other drinks warm for up to 7 hours, or cold for up to 18 hours.
6.KeepCup Thermal, Reusable Stainless Steel Cup
Commuting to the office on packed trains seems like a distant memory now in 2021 and while it was definitely unpleasant for the majority of the time, one of the few perks was the chance to survey everyone’s reusable coffee cup of choice each morning. There was always an interesting display of Chilly’s and Bodums, but the one that was without a doubt most popular was the Keepcup. The reusable brand’s latest offering is definitely one of its best, now incorporating vacuum-sealing thermal insulation to keep your coffee hot for far longer. Sleek and stylish and perfect for your desk, this is set to be a new favourite.
7.Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Coffee Travel Mug
Hydro Flasks have a huge following when it comes to water bottles, but the brand makes coffee mugs, (called coffee flasks) too! This travel coffee mug has anextra large opening for easy drinking. Plus, GH Lab tests found that its stainless steel, vacuum-insulated body kept drinks hot and cold for hours.
8.Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug
This well-insulated mug will keep your drinks cold or hot for up to six hours. Made from stainless steel, it has a SlickSteel finish inside, created by means of electro-polishing technology. As a result, the mug gets a smooth interior surface and is resistant to corrosion and stains.
The lid comes with a safety lock and fits tightly, ensuring proper heat retention. Thanks to its flip design, the lid opens easily with one hand. The mug is made with a wide mouth, so you can put full-size ice cubes there. You can drink directly from the mug, while the stopper is easily removed for cleaning. With a weight of just 9 ounces, the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug is compact and sleek.
9.Contigo Transit Autoseal Travel Mug
Contigo’s SnapSeal Byron Travel Mug is a basic mug that passed our leak tests, is easy to drink from and clean, and is wide enough to fit snugly in car cup holders. We like that it’s simple to use (one pop-top button lets you sip from the mug) and is easy to clean. Like the Transit, it also has a rubberized grip, so it’s easier to hold onto. It will keep drinks warm for hours at room temperature, although not as piping hot as our top pick . We’d be nervous to toss this mug into a bag since the tab on the lid doesn’t lock as securely as our other picks, but it’s a fine mug if you won’t throw it around as much.
10.Lasting Coffee Leak Proof Travel Mug
This Lasting Coffee mug has a large 500ml capacity so is ideal for those that want to take larger volumes of coffee on the go – maybe for a long commute or on long walks. In our tests, a hot coffee was still warm after 5 hours, although that may not be representative for all drinks.
The stainless steel design looks smart and the whole unit is dishwasher safe on the top rack. Another nice feature is the rubber base which stops the mug sliding if accidentally knocked – not that that should be a concern anyway, as this mug was completely leak proof as we held it upside down. Overall a highly recommended travel mug.
How to choose the best travel coffee cup for you
How much do I need to spend?
Travel mugs vary in price from a couple of quid up to over £30 and, generally speaking, you get what you pay for. If you only need a travel mug for occasional use, you can make do with a standard option for less than a tenner, but if you want to use it every day for outdoor activities or on your commute, you’ll want something that promises to perform in terms of heat retention, spill protection and robustness.
What features should I look out for?
Look out for features such as autoseal, lockable lids and easy-to-clean materials, as these are what set the best travel mugs apart from the cheaper options. If you need a mug that keeps drinks hot (or cold) for longer, you’ll need a double-wall, vacuum-insulated option, preferably constructed in stainless steel.
Again, you will always pay more for stainless steel, but it’s worth it if heat retention is a priority. If you have a tendency to drop things, it’s also wise to choose a mug that’s easy to grip. If you can’t quite allow yourself to part with over £20 for what’s essentially a coffee cup, opt for the next best composition, but ensure that the mug is double-walled.
Does it matter which size of mug I buy?
If you’ll be travelling by car with your mug, ensure you find a travel mug that fits a regular drinks holder and can be picked up with one hand. Travel mugs generally come in two sizes: around 360ml and around 470ml. The large options are perfect for carrying water or soup, but if it’s only ever going to be tea or coffee, you may want to get a smaller size, which fits better in your hand and under single-serve coffee machines.
The options are endless, so it really does come down to your lifestyle. If you’re always on the move, you may prefer something light and compact. Or perhaps you like to enjoy your coffee over a longer period of time, meaning insulation is key. There is no right or wrong type of cup to buy, but try to make sure you get one that is BPA-free – and one that doesn’t leak.
